ArcGIS ArcView 8.x Product Overview ArcGIS 8.x is ESRI’s flagship product line for definitive geographic analysis and mapping solutions from the most simple requests to the most complex analyses. Based on Microsoft’s Component Object Model (COM), ArcGIS takes the next step towards true object oriented programming architecture and relational data modeling. With the release of ArcGIS 8.x, ESRI has created a single, scalable architecture - the base product of which is ArcGIS ArcView 8.x consisting of the following three desktop applications: ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox. Generally speaking, ArcMap is the application in which all the traditional analysis, editing, and cartographic functionality of ArcView GIS 3.x is performed. ArcCatalog is ArcGIS’ data creation, organization and management application. This new resource provides the user with the ability to quickly preview the various components of a particular dataset and explore metadata within an enhanced Windows file explorer framework. ArcGIS also includes ArcToolbox, a set of Windows based wizards, which facilitate data conversion and management activities. ArcGIS ArcView 8.x is currently available in two separate licensing configurations – Single Use (the method available at ArcView 3.x where the application is installed on a single stand alone PC) and Concurrent Use. Concurrent licensing provides organizations with many users the flexibility to install ArcGIS on multiple PC’s while maintaining product licensing on a network server in tandem with ESRI’s license manager application. The management application tracks the number of software seats available at any given time and allows users access as those licenses become available. In this manner, users can switch between software applications and extensions depending on their daily tasks. Key Features as identified by ESRI

ArcView 3.x vs. ArcGIS ArcView 8.x Which version should I choose?
For users new to GIS and/or users who are not dependant on legacy applications, the preferred software is ArcGIS ArcView 8.x. This choice allows users to fully access the benefits provided by the Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) architecture upon which ArcGIS is based. For those users with unsupported operating systems for ArcGIS ArcView 8.x or for those organizations running applications utilizing custom tools developed for ArcGIS 3.x for which there would exist significant redevelopment costs, ArcView GIS 3.x or a hybrid of both versions would be the best bet. Current licensing structure allows users upgrading to ArcGIS ArcView 8.x to maintain a license of ArcView 3.x on the same PC to facilitate software transition.
